New Mpox Strain Detected in England: What We Know So Far

A new strain of mpox — previously known as monkeypox — has been identified in England, raising concerns among health officials and global disease experts. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) confirmed that this newly detected virus is a mix of two major mpox clades, and was found in an individual who recently returned from Asia.

While investigations are ongoing, officials emphasize that viral evolution is normal, and vaccinations continue to offer strong protection against severe illness.

A New Hybrid Mpox Strain

The new strain contains genetic elements from two known mpox clades:

  • Clade Ib – showing early signs of local spread in some European countries.
  • Clade IIb – the strain responsible for the global mpox outbreak in 2022.

This hybrid strain has not yet been officially named.

According to Dr. Katy Sinka, head of sexually transmitted infections at the UKHSA, advanced genomic testing enabled the detection:

“It’s normal for viruses to evolve… Getting vaccinated is a proven effective way to protect yourself against severe disease.”

Who Is Currently at Higher Risk?

In the UK, mpox vaccination is recommended for individuals with a higher likelihood of exposure, including:

  • People with multiple sexual partners
  • Individuals who engage in group sex
  • Visitors to sex-on-premises venues
  • Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM)

The mpox vaccine is estimated to be 75–80% effective. Although its effectiveness against the new strain is not yet studied, experts believe protection will remain high.

Global Concerns About Mpox Evolution

Experts warn that continued global spread of mpox gives the virus more opportunities to mutate and recombine.

“The more mpox circulation we permit, the more opportunities the virus has to recombine and adapt… further entrenching mpox virus as a human pathogen.”

Dr. Boghuma Titanji, Emory University

In 2025, there have been nearly 48,000 confirmed mpox cases worldwide, with 2,500 cases in the past month. Most infections continue to occur in Central Africa, where access to vaccines and healthcare is limited.

Prof. Trudie Lang from the University of Oxford noted that while the UK has excellent detection systems, many vulnerable regions do not.

Common Symptoms of Mpox

Mpox can cause an unpleasant illness lasting 2 to 4 weeks. Common symptoms include:

  • Skin lesions or rash
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Back pain
  • Muscle aches
  • Fatigue

The virus spreads through:

  • Close physical contact
  • Coughs or sneezes
  • Touching contaminated materials such as clothing, bedding, or towels

Anyone who suspects they may have mpox should contact NHS 111 for medical advice.

Should You Be Concerned?

Health officials are still studying whether this new strain spreads faster, causes more severe illness, or responds differently to vaccines. So far, there is no evidence that it is more dangerous than previous strains.

Vaccination remains the most effective protection.

Final Thoughts

The emergence of this hybrid mpox strain highlights the need for strong global surveillance and accessible vaccination programs. While the situation is being closely monitored, experts advise eligible individuals to stay protected by getting vaccinated.
